The Town of Eye (continued) Today, there is little of the castle remaining, but the history behind the ruins is full of intrigue. Built around 1066 by William Malet, the then Lord of the Manor, it was attacked by Hugh Bigod, Earl of Norfolk in 1173. He rebuilt the castle and priory only to be fired during the Barons War in 1265. From then on it started a down hill path being used as a prison for a short period followed by the locals demolishing the walls wanting cheap building materials. The picturesque ruined keep we see today was partly built as a folly, and as a house for his batman by Sir Edward Kerrison in 1844. Sir Edward was obviously grateful to the batman for saving his life at the battle of Waterloo. This is just a small sample of what the town of Eye has to offer. |
