The Town of Eye The Historic town of Eye is two and half miles away and full of interest. The word Eye is derived from the Old English for an island. In medieval times the town with church and castle would have been surrounded by water. The church of St Peter and St Paul, rightly described by Pevsner as "One of the Wonders of Suffolk" dated back to the 14th century and restored in 1869. Of particular interest is the wooden rood screen with its intricate carving and painted Kings, saints and bishops. The king post timber roof is partly painted and though restored, one can get an idea of what the interior would have been like in the middle ages when brilliant colours covered most of the surfaces. |
